Apollo is translating rawness into something addictive…
Apollo’s new single “Octane” seems straight out of a Cactus Jack member’s discography, with his melodic vocal stretches dipped in dark, drifting production. If you’re a fan of Don and Sheck Wes, you’d know how a simple cowbell can give their tracks an instant appeal, and with mysterious synths swirling around it, it feels like you’re on the road to a club, the car’s air thick with self-assurance - but with a hint of vulnerability.
As Apollo exhales, “the money gon’ numb the pain”, the decays feel equally mind-numbing, while the beat maintains its fast motion. The lyricism carries that same contrast, as Apollo raps about how riches come with costs, but his liquid, continuous delivery only shows that he’s not going to slow down anyway. His passion comes through in his free vocal stretches, much like Sheck’s, making the emotional tilt catchy - and soon you’ll find yourself looping the track just to experience that intoxicating complexity again.
Besides this single, which could very well be a prelude to Apollo’s new sonic direction, his older releases are worth checking out too. Take “Surfin’”, another melodic track, but this time atop a bouncier beat that makes it feel emotionally rougher around the edges. Lines like “They way too busy cappin’, snapbacks and fitteds / Y’all boys ain’t foolin’ anybody, I know I’m a witness” are delivered with that same rapid liquidness, but land more menacingly over the energetic production - a warning delivered with relaxed knowingness. That combination of rawness and catchiness makes the sound stick, to the point where you find yourself nodding along to both the relatability and the melodic appeal of the bars.
