We’ve had artists like Aphex Twin and Vegyn bring an unbelievable combination of ambient music and complex drums, creating that push and pull of contrasting moods that still comes together picturesquely. Now Crokomoko is arriving with that same kind of sonic diversity, the kind that lets entire sceneries form in your head even when you’re nowhere near what the music makes you imagine.

A highlight is his recent single “one foot in front of the other” for exactly that transporting effect. It opens with a gritty chaos of distorted drums, giving way to a cluttered beat - all laid over a looped, synthy vocal that makes you levitate. In effect, it’s rough but shining at the same time - like you’re climbing or walking down a crooked path, but all the while appreciating the unreal beauty around you. Surreal takes on a new meaning through this soundscape.

Crokomoko is building surreal dreamscapes through ambient sounds…

Crokomoko’s ambient forte is most apparent on his Lost LP, a collection of songs made from the tongue drum. The instrument itself has that organic quality because it reverberates through your ears, putting you in a meditative state. Even when it’s played at a fast pace, you still feel calm because of the ripple-like effect it has on the brain - thoughts turn empty and you feel comforted by the mix of major and minor tonalities. Just one front-to-back listen will have you coming back for that calm.

The best part about Crokomoko’s music is that even within this space, it never feels restricted. His YouTube is full of handpan fusions with funk and jazz, perfect for a solo midnight jam or for something to bop along to on the way to work. The experimentation is fascinating, and it’s only a wonder what he’ll bring next to transport you even further.
