Damo Wav is crafting his own aesthetic: cinematic flex…
Vocal modulation has become central to rap, so much so that it often stands out instantly. Coming from the greats like SahBabii and Playboi Carti, this element has percolated down to the underground, with lowkey artists like Gvlli3 stretching out their drawls to craft a unique aesthetic. Damo Wav is a newcomer in this arena, positioning a brand that can only be described as cinematic flex.
Damo’s Made in Tokyo EP takes you through the flashy streets of the city through both its fast, almost mechanical synths, and its bite-sized echoing vocals. Check out “ON THE MOVE,” which launches you into an ambitious sound full of pure movement. The synths repeatedly attack like lightning, while the hook lands deep and sinister. His quick flow floats you across the city’s streets that are already bursting with life, just as you are with the confidence that your hustle makes you deserving of the view.
In fact, the whole project carries Tokyo’s visuals, and you even feel the energy of the city’s hidden pockets in the softer, bouncing backdrop of “NEW EPISODE.” The track is especially memorable because of the witty references, delivered in a fast, swinging wheeze - like he’s preluding more of the finer things he’s going to earn, while still sounding relaxed about it. The smooth mix of setting and status collide to give you the full experience.
Damo carries that aesthetic even into his new single, “Dreamscape.” The cover itself seems inspired by an Impressionist painting, already crafting a luxurious visual. His vocals stretch longer, layered in a higher pitch that intoxicates you. The beat contrasts this with its erratic punchiness, but it all blends together like a surreal fit check, perfectly complementing the slick talk Damo nails across his discography.
