Headband Andy is giving the WLR blueprint new life…
The insane vocal pivot that Carti took on WLR is, to this day, a bible that the underground bases its sound on, and Headband Andy comes through as a trailblazer who keeps that prime sound alive while adding such unique, creative twists to it from both sonic angles and pure bars.
You might remember “Vito/Bad Boy”, which went viral for the way it mixed classical strings and 808s in the same way Carti’s fan-mixed track “Crack” did. He carries that same experimentalism into his last project “Pass Me a Headband!”, a collection of ambient backdrops overlaid with sparkly elements and racy beats. A spotlight is “bangmychest!”, featuring a reggae style over which he raps in a deep but elastic voice. The flow is continuous, while the beat stays playfully mellow but still full of movement. Every track on this project feels colourful in the way it creates such an infectious groove, and just one listen has the tracks making their way onto the house party playlist.
But the versatility doesn’t stop there - peep Headband Andy’s latest single “424”, filled with that same colourful bounce, this time wrapped in underground beats. Acidic synths pepper the thumping production, while his fluid raps crack with that deep, self-assured edge. The flows relax and pace up exactly when they need to, coming together with the beat in a way that lands as instantly catchy. In fact, his whole ethos seems built on surprising listeners, because you never know what style or vocal pitch is coming next, deep or high-pitched, but it’s always sure to be in a flow state over some complex production.
Even his latest On The Radar Freestyle puts him over more rage beats. Chaos clangs in your ear while he delivers witty bangers like “Damar Hamlin, I’m in the field till my last breather” and “Franck Muller two-faced, I can’t trust what the clock says”. So his versatile delivery now marries itself to just about anything imaginable, not just in the underground but across different genres, showing that rap really does start out with flows.
