Jay Spade is pushing Southern rap’s hype and wit…
Long-time listeners of Southern rap already know that nothing sounds quite like it: that raw energy that hits you when BigXThaPlug or Key Glock glide over a beat with self-assured, witty raps. You instinctively bop your head, but still feel the words pushing you forward.
Jay Spade comes through with that same formula, and just one stroll through his discography shows how confidently he’s been embracing that living-large Southern sound. An obvious highlight is his project, Remember My Name, which showcases just how versatile his flows can be. On Karrueche, a triumphant brass note rings out in the backdrop while bright synth pads come together to add a layer of funkiness, before you catch a bar: “Money talks, money talks but no this ain’t Chris Tucker.” The beat is rich, and so is the modulation, with Jay reaching deep to end every line with what feels like an attack. So while it might be the perfect track for a sunny coastal drive, it’s also the kind of song that makes you want to bench more than you did yesterday.
Another track that’ll have you floating is the atmospheric, jazzy “Off White”. As the trumpet drops lower, Jay does too, and as it climbs higher, he subtly tunes his voice to follow it. The waviness of the track gets amplified because it feels like Jay is walking hand in hand with the beat. The slick talk stays classy but still feels modern, almost symbolic of the uniqueness Jay keeps surprising us with.
But Jay’s new single, “OUTSIDE”, plays like a bolder version of his Southern side, where he enters a vengeful, liquid flow state as bells crash in the backdrop to build hype. It’s the kind of track that feels easy to visualise live. There’s even a hint of Takeoff’s rough modulation in the delivery, so you’ll find yourself hooked on the adlibs as Jay proves he can channel explosive energy, catchy hooks, and storytelling while asserting himself for all to see.
Go listen to “OUTSIDE” out now!
