Nate Royce is expanding on mellowness with his recent EP Chøsen. It carries that Yunggoth energy through slow confessions delivered in deep, almost mind-numbing vocals. Ian Harlow’s production drips over the tracks, cascading slowly and pulling you into a trance, while Nate’s voice carries the weight of the melancholy.

The opening track “Chøsen” sets the mood straight away. Its haunting backdrop echoes “Love Me Again” by Younggoth, and you can feel Nate laying everything out. He’s owning his flaws in real time, but also speaking on turning things around because he feels chosen. That balance between doubt and belief runs through the whole EP.

Nate Royce is rising through mellow melancholy…

“Are Yøu Seriøus?” is one highlight - indie strings arrive with uplifting synths, creating this strange mix of doubt and drive. His drawls stretch across the beat as he questions himself, then flips it into confidence with lines like, “Two choices in this world, grind hard or play it safe / Oakley glasses on me she think it’s a blind date.” You hear the conflict, but you also hear someone who knows who he is.

The grief of losing his mom hangs over the project too. It feels darker and rawer than what came before, but that honesty turns into strength. He brings everything to the front and leans on the mic to push through.

That same mellowness shows up across his discography. On his first album Øk, I Get It, he leans more melodic. In “Reptilian,” strings and violin carry nostalgia and regret, while the trap feel makes the heartbreak hit harder. Across it all, you come out of it feeling like you can handle your own weight a little better.
