Ohana Fresh is bringing a crazy amount of diversity to the hip-hop scene, switching paces and flows in a way that creates this infectious tunnel vision, the kind that locks you into your grind and makes you want to rise with him.
His recent single pack puts him in the spotlight as a fresh introduction to where he’s headed next - gritty, dark beats taking centre stage. “Villain Arc” is a standout, built on a backdrop that samples “Feelings” by Bat Boy Blankie. The vocal distortion hits as he talks about separating himself from the fakes, the beat snapping into focus as he zeros in on running it up. There’s a lot of old Kenny Mason in the tone, especially in the way he frames discipline and self-belief: focusing on himself, rising above, establishing a standing for his own sake, holding a mirror up to himself and not anyone else. The pack itself arrived after his mom’s passing, which only sharpened that motivation to chart ahead, and it feels like he’s going to carry that pain forward into something powered by sheer will, the need to be the best - a feeling so many people can relate to.
Ohana Fresh is turning self-belief into a villain arc…
Ohana hasn’t been a stranger to carving out his own identity, either. His debut album Prisoner 7771 dropped in 2021, an extremely experimental tape considering it landed right in the peak TikTok era that pushed pop rap front and centre for catchiness. Here, he leans into an XXXTENTATION-type roughness on “Rage Quit”, then switches into energetic drill that evokes his Chicago roots, before flipping again into a raw, talk-rapping intensity that calls back to Childish Gambino’s Because The Internet era. Tracks like “Sunday Cartoons” sit atop a dark, mellow beat as he reminisces on a simpler time against the racial violence of the world we live in now.
It’s wild to see how little he restricts himself: always willing to step into different flows and production choices just to be himself, and still push ahead with no brakes.
