Toronto has already established itself as the breeding ground for dark R&B, with OVO setting the blueprint and newer artists like Pino carrying that chilly air aesthetic forward. Remsen brings his own magic to the sound, proving that what’s expressed in vibrato and flash can be turned into something quiet, like confessions meant to be held close.

His voice comes through like a stream of consciousness, an outpour of thoughts in real time. His last album Eventually Now is basically a poster for the solo late night walk. On “Things I Never Understand”, the lead is so twisted, almost like it’s carving out an equally warped path. His comforting voice lands deep, almost pushing your gaze up at a starry sky, with the existential feeling those rising synths create.

Remsen is bringing a quiet collapse to Toronto R&B…

That same voice also carries range. On that album alone, “Sacrifice” has him in his R&B bag, stacking vocal layering over tunnelling synths. At times he speaks with a numb edge, and at others he leans into melodies that feel intuitively cried out. His flair lies in that emotional modulation.

Even though Remsen started out with introspective rap, his recent track “Limbo” shows him wrapping that style in a soulful feeling, letting the softness in his voice carry the baggage. It contrasts with how passionately the instrumental layers collide here, evoking Avenoir. Helplessness, heartbreak and desperation all tumble out smoothly, and the visuals only amplify it - whether he’s staring at the ceiling from his bed or out in the freezing cold, he’s alone. The sound is calm and crumbling at the same time - and somehow still blankets you.

Go listen to “Limbo” out now!
