The beauty of melodic rap is that it’s managed to transcend its prime SoundCloud era into a blend with the electronica that defines today’s underground. Combine that with a lowkey delivery and you get tunes you’ll literally float on, something Stinky Pete has made his home ground. For fans of Lil Tecca’s catchy flows and Dom Corleo and Coults’ bouncy trance production style, his sound will stick instantly.

Stinky Pete’s recent track “DA GENESIS” is worth checking out, especially for its liquid modulation melting with decays, delivered in the kind of laid-back flow that makes you sink deeper into the intoxicated state it’s meant to be enjoyed in. The somber loop in the background even transports you to an after-dark setting - the visuals have Stinky Pete showing out like he’s borrowing the rhythm of the city and bending it to his own effortless vibe. That’s what gives the music its personality.

Stinky Pete is melting melodic rap into a nocturnal trance…

Another crazy track is “COOKIN’’’, which’ll remind you of “F&F” by Coults, with its mysterious 808s that almost invoke a menacing ring walk. You catch Stinky Pete in a full flow state, rapping over the sampled “lovely” by Billie Eilish and Khalid. What’s meant to be a heavy emotional pop track gets transformed into a dark melodic blend, something like what Twenty One Pilots, one of his major influences, did, except here it’s driven by the casual flexes he smoothly enters with.

Stinky Pete’s been dropping for a long time, though, and throughout his discography there’s a mix of sounds to be heard - sometimes synthy and cinematic, sometimes pure lowrider bounce with cowbell-driven production, and other times even bleeding emo. His flows always stretch to own the vibe, and the music works just as well on a wild night out as it does when walking alone and letting thoughts run long.

Go listen to “DA GENESIS” out now!
